NAC before drinking: what glutathione has to do with your hangover
If you spend any time in Reddit's supplement communities or hangover-science corners of TikTok, you've seen NAC come up. It gets recommended alongside DHM, sometimes in place of it, occasionally with confident but contradictory dosing advice.
Here's what's actually going on.
What NAC is
N-Acetyl Cysteine is a modified amino acid and the direct precursor to glutathione, your body's most abundant intracellular antioxidant. It's been used clinically for decades as an acetaminophen overdose antidote and as a mucolytic agent for lung conditions. The mechanism in both cases is the same: NAC donates cysteine, which your body uses to synthesize glutathione fast.
Outside the hospital, NAC has been studied for everything from liver support to psychiatric conditions. The thread connecting all of it is oxidative stress: NAC replenishes the antioxidant your body uses to handle it.
What glutathione does
Glutathione is sometimes called the "master antioxidant" and that's reasonably accurate, though a little reductive. More precisely, it's the primary reducing agent your liver uses to neutralize reactive oxygen species and toxic metabolites.
When your liver breaks down alcohol, acetaldehyde is the toxic intermediate that forms first. Detoxifying acetaldehyde draws heavily on your liver's glutathione reserves. At moderate drinking levels, your body keeps up. At higher levels, or after repeated nights out without recovery time, glutathione gets depleted faster than it's replenished.
Depleted glutathione means less antioxidant capacity, more oxidative stress on liver cells, and a slower, harder recovery. That's part of what a hangover is.
The problem with taking NAC the morning after
This is where most people get it wrong. NAC taken after you've been drinking is working from behind. By that point, the alcohol is largely processed, the oxidative damage has already accumulated, and your glutathione stores are at their lowest.
NAC raises cysteine availability, which enables glutathione synthesis, but synthesis takes time. You're restocking a reserve that's already been spent.
The math is better when you go the other direction.
Why the timing window matters
Taken 30 to 60 minutes before drinking, NAC gives your body a head start. Cysteine availability goes up. Glutathione synthesis starts before the oxidative load from alcohol hits. Your liver enters the night with more antioxidant capacity, not less.
This is the same logic behind Pregame as a whole: the ingredients that work best on alcohol's effects are the ones present in your system as those effects are happening, not the ones you take at 8am trying to undo them.
It's not a cure. Nothing is. But front-loading your antioxidant reserve is meaningfully different from trying to rebuild it in the middle of a deficit.

What NAC doesn't do
Worth saying clearly: NAC does not reduce blood alcohol. It does not prevent impairment. It supports your liver's ability to manage the byproducts of alcohol metabolism, which is a real and meaningful effect, but it is not a green light to drink more.
